avoiding the fiscal cliff. new polling suggests support for president obama's position in the standoff with congressional republicans. >> the new associated press poll finds 48% of americans want tax cuts for wealthy to expire. and it says more people want to cut government services than raise taxes to reduce the federal deficit. >> now, if the nation goes over the cliff at the end of the year, it's going to affect everyone, including the unemployed, as abc's jonathan karl reports. >> reporter: melinda vega has been put on notice. if congress and the president don't get their act together, her unemployment checks will stop immediately at the end of the year. >> we're dependent on that money to pay our bills. >> reporter: she's been without a job for a year. her $450 a week unemployment check her life line. >> we won't be able to pay some of our bills and, i mean, you know, that's for christmas and things of that nature, probably off the table. >> reporter: she is not alone. without a deal, unemployment compensation will end for more than 2 million people out of work more than 26 weeks.

hurtling even closer to the fiscal cliff. now, 28 days from now. abc's jake tapper has news tonight on one thing both sides may agree to change, and it's something that could affect millions of american families and fast. >> reporter: president obama used his first interview since his re-election to drive home his insistence that key to the u.s. beginning to pay down its debt and avoid going over the fiscal cliff is raising tax rates on the wealthiest americans. >> we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up, and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. >> reporter: if republicans agree to do that, the president told bloomberg television, he'll agree to serious spending cuts. republicans have offered to raise taxes on higher incomes by $800 billion, not by raising tax rates, but by eliminating some deductions and loopholes. during last year's budget showdown, the president said he wanted to do exactly that. >> what we said was give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues, which could be accomplished without hiking tax rates, but could simply be accomplished by elim

that fiscal cliff, we just come off a week of press conferences, symbolic votes in senate, but less than an hour of serious negotiating. what will it take to break the stalemate? we'll get into that this morning, with two big roundtables of elected officials and experts. let's begin with the lawmakers. senator tom coburn for the republicans and debbie stabenow for the democrats. and congressman hensarlingg. the president said that for there to be a big deal, tax rates on the wealthy are going to have to go up. if that's his bottom line, can there be a deal? >> again, as the speaker has said, unfortunately what we see out of the president is my way or the highway. one dollar revenue for 2.5 of spending reductions. now, after the election, it's a little bit of bait and switch. now he's asking for $1.6 trillion. and if you look closely, for every one dollar of tax increase there's about 20 cents of spending reductions. >> i'm talking about the rates. if the rates go up, can the republicans in the house accept the tax increase? >> no rep wants to vote for a rate tax increase. what that's goi
